The St Louis Cardinals broke through Milwaukee’s bullpen, tagging the Brewers for three runs in the top of the 12th to get past the NL Central leaders 7-4 on Tuesday night at Miller Park.
Michael Siani’s single with no outs brought home Victor Scott II and Iván Herrera to swing the game in the Cardinals’ favor. Siani then scored on Alec Burleson’s sacrifice fly, setting up Ryan Helsley to retire the side in the 12th for the win. Helsley had blown his fourth save of the season in the previous inning, when the Cardinals unsuccessfully challenged the ruling on the field that Siani failed to catch a pop fly with two outs. The ball was flung out of Siani’s glove on the landing.
The game had gone into extra innings after both bullpens put lids on offenses that broke out early. The Cardinals scored two runs in the first, but the Brewers tied it with a pair of home runs in the third. Paul Goldschmidt reclaimed the lead with a solo shot in the fourth, only for Jackson Chourio to hit an RBI double in the fifth to erase the Cardinals’ lead.
Steven Matz had a no decision in the start for the Cardinals, going 4.2 innings and allowing three runs on three hits and one walk while striking out seven. Four Cardinal relievers combined for another six strikeouts while allowing one hit and two walks.
The Cardinals (70-69) remain 5.5 games behind Atlanta for the third wild card spot, as both the Braves and Mets won Tuesday night. The Redbirds will complete their stay in Milwaukee on Wednesday evening, with first pitch at 6:40.
