Jazz Chisholm Jr’s single in the eleventh inning brought in the winning run for the New York Yankees, as the AL East leaders defeated the Kansas City Royals 4-3 on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium to win the series.

Chisholm’s grounder was fielded by Bobby Witt Jr, whose throw home was offline, allowing Jon Berti to score the walk-off winner with ease. The Royals had scored first with Michael Massey’s solo home run in the fourth. The Yankees took a 2-1 lead in the sixth when Juan Soto belted a two-run shot to right field, two pitches after hitting a foul ball into his foot. The lead was short-lived, as Salvador Perez brought in Kyle Isbel on a sacrifice fly in the seventh. The Royals would reclaim the lead in the tenth on a wild pitch, but a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning forced an extra frame.

The two-run home run was the only blemish on Cole Ragans’ quality start, going six innings and allowing three hits and three walks while striking out seven. Kris Bubic suffered his third blown save of the year and tallied his first loss, allowing one hit and one walk with both runs unearned in his 1.1 innings of work.

Both Cleveland and Minnesota won last night, placing the Royals (80-67) 4.5 games behind the Guardians in the AL Central and 1.5 games ahead of Minnesota for the second wild card spot. The Royals have Thursday off before visiting Pittsburgh for a three-game interleague series starting Friday.
