A one-out double in the eighth inning from Nathan Lukes brought in the game winner for Toronto, resulting in a sweep of the St Louis Cardinals on Sunday afternoon north of the border.
The 3-2 loss came after the Cardinals out-hit the Blue Jays seven to six, only to hit into two double plays and strand six runners. The Cardinals started the scoring with Jordan Walker’s double in the top of the fifth that brought home Iván Herrera. The Blue Jays responded with a two-run blast from Davis Schneider. The Redbirds tied the game with Lars Nootbaar’s tenth home run of the year to lead off the seventh.
Andrew Kittredge took the loss, allowing two hits and a walk in his two-thirds of an inning as well as a strikeout. Miles Mikolas went five innings in his start, allowing two runs on three hits while recording four punchouts.
The Cardinals are back below .500, 12 games behind Milwaukee and seven games behind Atlanta and New York in the wild card standings with 13 games remaining. The Pittsburgh Pirates are on their way to Busch Stadium for the start of a four-game series. Game one is tonight (Monday) at 6:45 p.m.
