A bases-loaded walk with two outs in the fifth ended up being the game winner for the Pittsburgh Pirates, as the Kansas City Royals couldn’t overcome a sluggish pitching performance from Brady Singer in a 4-3 loss Sunday afternoon at PNC Park.
The Pirates staked an early lead when Bryan Reynolds hit an RBI double to left field. The Royals quickly responded with Yuli Gurriel’s sacrifice fly to score Michael Massey. KC took the lead in the fourth when Maikel Garcia doubled in Gurriel, only for Pittsburgh to tie in the home half of the inning. After Pittsburgh took the lead in the fifth, the Royals could only score one more run, also a bases-loaded walk given to Bobby Witt Jr.
Singer took the loss, allowing all four runs on six hits and four walks while striking out six in five innings. Carmen Mlodzinski pitched a scoreless fifth to claim the win for Pittsburgh.
The Royals fall to 82-68, four games behind Cleveland in the AL Central and two behind Baltimore for the top wild card position. They’re back at Kauffman Stadium on Monday evening for their final series against an AL Central team, a Detroit Tigers squad that’s 2.5 games behind Minnesota for the third wild card spot. Seth Lugo is on the mound for first pitch at 6:40; we’ll have pregame from 6 p.m. on KMMO.
