Both of the region’s Major League Soccer teams posted losses this weekend and could find themselves eliminated from playoff contention in the next week.
St Louis City SC netted their goal in the fourth minute, but couldn’t keep Minnesota United from making themselves at home at CITYPARK on Saturday night as the Loons posted a 3-1 win to open an 11-point gap in the playoff chase with just five games remaining.
Cedric Teuchert scored the lone goal for St Louis, his third of the season in just five games, when he notched his shot into the bottom left corner of the goal. However, Minnesota would equalize in the 23rd minute when Bongokuhle Hlongwane bullseyed his shot from the center of the box. St Louis’ Jay Reid gifted Minnesota the winner in the 52nd minute when he deflected a cross from Kelvin Yeboah into the net. Yeboah would claim a goal of his own ten minutes later on a penalty kick.
Minnesota’s win keeps the Loons in the final playoff spot, with St Louis 11 points behind on 28 points and just five games remaining to make a run. City will visit San Jose next Saturday to face the last-place Earthquakes.
Meanwhile, Sporting Kansas City allowed both goals in the first half to fall 2-0 at the Seattle Sounders on Sunday night. Jackson Ragen and Paul Rothrock scored for the Sounders in a game that saw Sporting unable to capitalize on 11 corner kick opportunities. The loss also keeps Kansas City on 28 points, sitting 12th in the Western Conference on better goal differential. Sporting host the next two games, Colorado on Wednesday and Minnesota on Saturday.
