
The Kansas City Royals greeted fans to Kauffman Stadium in the final homestand of the regular season with a grand slam, but couldn’t hold onto the lead as the Detroit Tigers came from behind to defeat the Royals 7-6 on Monday night.
Bobby Witt Jr put the Royals on the board with the grand slam in the third inning, his 32nd home run of the season. But from there, the Detroit Tigers chiseled away, picking up a run in the fourth. The Royals got that run back in the bottom half of of the inning with Maikel Garcia’s RBI single. The Tigers claimed three runs in the fifth, aided by a throwing error from Witt and a two-run home run by Colt Keith. That was enough to end Seth Lugo’s start, as he went 4.2 innings and earned all four runs allowed on eight hits and two walks while fanning four. Witt redeemed himself with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth, but the Tigers would claim the remaining runs, with Wenceel Pérez doubling in the tying run in the sixth, followed by Matt Vierling bringing Pérez home to provide the ultimate game-winner.
Sam Long took the loss for the Royals, allowing three runs in just two-thirds of an inning on three hits while claiming a strikeout. Brenan Hanifee picked up his first win of the year in 2.1 innings of work, allowing one run on three hits but striking out three.
Cleveland’s win over Minnesota, while Baltimore had the day off, has the Royals now at 82-69, five games behind the Guardians in the AL Central and two-and-a-half games behind Baltimore for the top wild card spot. The Twins are behind the Royals by 2.5 games, with Detroit sitting just 1.5 games behind the Twins. The second game of the Royals’ series against Detroit is Tuesday evening, with Cole Ragans expected to start for Kansas City. First pitch is at 6:40 p.m., with pregame coverage beginning at 6 p.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
