Home runs by Jordan Walker and Iván Herrera lifted the St Louis Cardinals to a 6-5 win Saturday night over the Cleveland Guardians, in a game that saw playoff fates determined before first pitch.
Walker’s home run put the Cardinals on the board first, a two-run shot in the fourth inning. That ultimately proved to be the difference-maker, as Bo Naylor sent a solo shot over center field in the fifth inning. The Cardinals attempted to open the game up with four runs in the seventh inning, including Herrera’s three-run jolt to center field, but Cleveland claimed those runs back in the eighth.
Miles Mikolas completed a quality start for his ninth win of the year, going six innings and allowing one run on four hits while striking out four. Ryan Helsley picked up his 46th save of the year to pull level with Cleveland’s Emmanuel Clase.
St Louis had been eliminated from the postseason earlier in the day following the New York Mets’ win over the Phillies. The Cardinals (78-77) conclude their series with Cleveland Sunday afternoon at 1:15.
