Public works crews have announced a second closing for a Sedalia intersection because of an ongoing stormwater improvement project, and at least one resident has complained to City Hall about its impact.

The City of Sedalia announced Monday afternoon it would once again close the intersection of 12th and Montgomery on Thursday and Friday to continue one of eight stormwater improvement projects in the city. The intersection had been closed last week for the project before inclement weather delayed its completion. During Monday night’s city council meeting, a resident near the intersection voiced complaints of delays, storm runoff, and several utility disruptions during the project. City administrator Kelvin Shaw responded to the resident’s complaints.

Crews are also closing the intersection of 12th and Brown from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25.

Public comment and council remarks during Monday’s meeting lasted nearly 40 minutes, including an over 15-minute defense of the city’s efforts in their dispute with Pettis County Commissioners by Fourth Ward Councilman Steve Bloess. Shaw says Bloess’ remarks stem from recent social media posts critical of the city’s decision to mail to residents a written call to action challenging the commission’s decision to withold road and bridge tax funds from the city.

Western District Commissioner Jim Marcum was among the attendees who addressed the council during their “Good and Welfare” portion of the meeting, briefly touching on Bloess’ remarks. Several other residents who are part of a recently formed concerned citizens’ group also delivered remarks critical of the city’s approach. Councilman Bloess said he would visit with commissioners Tuesday morning to reiterate the city’s position.
