It took 28 innings, but the Kansas City Royals finally scored a run. It happened to be courtesy runner Kyle Isbel in the 10th inning, and it happened to be the only run scored in Tuesday’s 1-0 victory over the Washington Nationals in DC.
Bobby Witt Jr singled a grounder to shortstop Nasim Nuñez, who then made a throwing error to allow Isbel to score. The Nationals were able to advance their runner to third in the bottom half of the tenth, but Lucas Erceg was able to strike out pinch hitter Joey Gallo to take the save and snap Kansas City’s seven-game losing streak.
The Royals still struggled to create offense, with another seven runners left on base and going 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. That included being unable to bring runners home in the first with the bases loaded and no one out, after Yuli Gurriel hit a line-out to Nuñez, who then threw to second to get Witt out for the double play.
It was another quality start for Cole Ragans, who went six innings and allowed just three hits and three walks while striking out six. Angel Zerpa pitched a scoreless ninth to claim the win, his second of the year.
The Royals (83-74) remain tied for the second wild card spot with Detroit while holding the tiebreaker over the Tigers. While Detroit also won last night against Tampa Bay, Minnesota fell to Florida and Seattle lost to Houston. That puts the Royals two games ahead of Minnesota and 2.5 games ahead of Seattle.
Game two of the Royals’ series at Washington is Wednesday, with pregame at 5 p.m. and first pitch at 5:45 p.m. on KMMO AM 1300.
