Matthew Liberatore threw 14 pitches in his lone inning of work, but the Cardinals reliever’s offline throw to first made him the losing pitcher in Saturday’s 6-5 loss at San Francisco.
Liberatore fielded a bunt from Brett Wisely, but bounced the ball past first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and into foul territory, allowing Tyler Fitzgerald to score the winning run. Liberatore was assessed an error to go along with his two hits and two strikeouts in the loss. It was the second error of the game, after Masyn Winn’s fielding error allowed the Giants to get their first lead of the game in the bottom of the first.
Goldschmidt had put the Cardinals on the board in the top of the first with a sacrifice fly. He went three-for-four on the day, recording two doubles and a pair of RBIs. Brendan Donovan also had a three-hit afternoon, while Nate Burleson and Pedro Pagés added a pair of hits. Jordan Walker tied the game in the seventh with a single.
Andre Pallante went five innings in the no decision, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits while fanning four. Ryan Walker picked up the win for San Francisco.
The season for both teams conclude Sunday afternoon, with first pitch from Oracle Park at 2:05 p.m.
