St Louis City overwhelmed Sporting Kansas City with a 3-1 victory Saturday night at CITYPARK, only for their playoff aspirations to come to an end with results elsewhere.
Cedric Teuchert recorded a first-half goal and assisted on both second half goals to lead St Louis, as the hosts claimed a slight advantage on possession time. Sporting outshot City 18 to 14, but could only get five shots on target, with Stephen Afrifa netting KC’s lone goal in the 63rd minute. Roman Bürki made four saves to keep St Louis in control of the contest, while Sporting keeper John Pulskamp was among three players booked late in the first half.
Despite the win, St Louis City were eliminated from postseason contention with Minnesota’s 3-0 win over Colorado. Still, City are now ahead of Sporting for 12th in the Western Conference with 34 points. They’ll visit conference-leading Los Angeles FC on Wednesday, before LAFC make their way to Children’s Mercy Park to take on Sporting next Saturday evening for Sporting’s home season finale.

Temwa Chawinga netted her 17th goal of the season, as the Kansas City Current played to a 1-1 draw Saturday against Gotham FC at CPKC Stadium. Chawinga’s goal in the 52nd minute came from a turnover that midfielder Debinha seized upon, sending it to the Malawian striker who outpaced the keeper for the score. Gotham’s only score was deemed a own goal assessed to the Current’s Alana Cook, off a deflection after a corner kick.
With four games remaining in the regular season, Chawinga is one goal shy of tying the NWSL single season scoring record. She’ll have her next chance to achieve the feat next Saturday at Racing Louisville. The Current remain in fourth on 43 points, having already secured a spot in the NWSL postseason.
