The Kansas City Royals took the lead early and held on as they punched their ticket to Baltimore for the playoffs, defeating the Atlanta Braves 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at Truist Park.

The Royals got on the board with no outs in the top of the first, with a three-run home run from Michael Massey. The Braves got on the board in the third with Gio Urshela’s solo shot, countered by a Hunter Renfroe home run in the top of fourth. The Braves scored their second and final run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single.

Bobby Witt Jr went one-for-four to finish the season with a .332 batting average, winning the AL batting title. He becomes the third Royals to achieve the feat, following George Brett and Willie Willson. Alec Marsh went five innings in the win, allowing both runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out a pair. Kris Bubic earned the save.

With Chicago defeating Detroit 9-5, the Royals reclaimed the second wild card spot and will visit Baltimore for the start of the AL Wild Card series. Game One from Camden Yards on Tuesday will be at 3:08 p.m., with Game Two on Wednesday at 3:38 p.m. Cole Ragans is expected to start Game One for the Royals, while Seth Lugo is tabbed to start Game Two. If a third game is necessary, it will take place Thursday, with Michael Wacha projected to get the start.
