Despite the first two drives ending in turnovers and a costly injury, the Kansas City Chiefs recovered to keep the Los Angeles Chargers out of the end zone the rest of the game, prevailing 17-10 Sunday afternoon at SoFi Stadium.
The Chargers took advantage of Carson Steele’s fumble on the Chiefs’ opening drive, going 74 yards to score first. Patrick Mahomes threw an interception two plays later to set up the Chargers’ next score, a 50-yard field goal. The interception was fumbled out of bounds, and during the attempt to recover it, Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice injured his knee and had to leave the game.
After three straight drives with a punt, the Chiefs’ fortunes changed on the first play of the following drive, when Mahomes aired a 54-yard pass to Xavier Worthy, who came down with it in the end zone for the Chiefs’ first score. Harrison Butker missed a field goal attempt just before half from 65 yards, but converted a much easier 37-yarder to start the third quarter and tie the game. The Chiefs defense secured another fourth-down red zone stop early in the fourth quarter, and the offense went ahead for good with six minutes remaining with Samaje Perine’s two-yard run across the goal line.
Mahomes finished the day 19-for-29 with 245 yards and one touchdown to go with the one interception. Travis Kelce caught seven of those passes for 89 yards, while Kareem Hunt led the ground game with 69 yards on 14 carries.
The Chiefs have an extra day to assess their latest spate of injuries, as they return to Arrowhead Stadium for Monday Night Football on October 5th against the New Orleans Saints.
