The Kansas City Royals defeated the Baltimore Orioles 2-1 on Wednesday, advancing to the American League Division Series.
The Royals got on the board in the first inning, when Vinnie Pasquantino drove in Michael Massey with an RBI single.
Baltimore would get that run back in the fifth, as Cedric Mullins drilled a solo homer to tie the game. Bobby Witt Jr. was once again the hero, driving home the winning run with an infield hit in the sixth inning.
Starter Seth Lugo only lasted 4 1/3 innings, giving up one run on five hits and a walk. He struck out six in the outing. Angel Zerpa, John Schreiber, Sam Long, and Kris Bubic shut down the Orioles before Lucas Erceg closed out the series with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
The Royals now advance to the ALDS, where they will face the AL East Champion New York Yankees, with Game 1 of the series beginning on Saturday, October 5. Gerrit Cole is expected to start for New York. Kansas City has yet to name a starter.
