
Four Missouri Valley College student-athletes earned weekly awards from the Heart of America Athletic Conference for their performances in competitions last week. Two soccer and two women’s volleyball student-athletes were recognized.
Goalkeeper Cristobal Benitez Delgado was named the Heart Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week. Benitez Delgado led the No. 10 Vikings to a pair of road wins over Nationally ranked teams. He made seven saves in a 2-1 win at No. 20 MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.), and added a seven-save performance in a 3-1 victory over No. 6 William Penn (Iowa).
This is the first weekly award of the season for Benitez Delgado, and the fourth of his career. He joins teammates Defender Jacob Adams and Forward Sam Green as previous weekly award winners so far this season. The men’s soccer team is 9-1-1 overall and 6-0 in the Heart. Up next, is a home game against Grand View (Iowa), Saturday at 3:30 p.m., inside Volney C. Ashford Stadium.
Goalkeeper Marina Barbara Bujalance was named the Heart Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week. Barbara Bujalance helped the No. 22 Vikings secure a pair of shutout victories, with seven saves in a 1-0 win at No. 19 MidAmerica Nazarene, followed by two saves in a 7-0 win at William Penn.
This is the first-career weekly award for Barbara Bujalance, and joins Forward Ashley Arribas as an award winner so far this season. The Vikings are 8-3-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the Heart. Up next is a home match against Benedictine (Kansas), Wednesday at 7 p.m., inside Volney C. Ashford Stadium.
A pair of women’s volleyball student-athletes earned weekly Heart awards for their performances in upset victories last week. The Vikings topped No. 17 Park (Mo.) in five games, then swept No. 25 Benedictine (Kan.). The wins over ranked opponents were the first for the program since August of 2018.
Outside Hitter Ana Oro was named the Heart Women’s Volleyball Attacker of the Week. Oro finished with a total of 45 kills, a 3.46 kills per game average, to go with 67 digs, on a 5.15 digs per game average. Oro registered double-doubles in all three games last week, of kills and digs, including 18 kills against Baker (Kan.) and a season-high 28 digs in the win over Park. Oro has totaled at least 10 kills in 18 of 20 matches this season.
Also earning a weekly award was Libero Ana Franco, who was named the Heart Women’s Volleyball Defender of the Week. Franco finished with 57 total digs on the week, including 27 digs against Baker and 22 digs in the win over Park. Franco was also a perfect 26-for-26 on serve receptions against Park, and has posted double-digit digs in seven of the past nine matches.
Both Oro and Franco earned the first weekly Heart awards of their respective careers, and become the first members of the team to earn an award this season. Women’s volleyball is 12-8 overall and 4-3 in the Heart. Up next is a road match in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, against Mount Mercy (Iowa), Friday at 7 p.m.
