The Kansas City Chiefs had perhaps their most comfortable game of the early season, as they dominated yardage and time of possession and led from the opening drive, en route to a 26-13 win over the New Orleans Saints at Arrowhead Stadium on Monday Night Football.
The 10-play, 78-yard opening drive was capped off by Kareem Hunt’s five-yard touchdown run, his first score as a Chief in six years. Hunt finished the game with 27 carries for 102 yards and the one touchdown, a key part of the Chiefs’ offense that totaled 460 yards compared to the Saints’ 220. After the first of four Harrison Butker field goals on the night, Derek Carr was able to connect with Rashid Shaheed for a 43-yard touchdown pass, followed by the extra point from Smith-Cotton alum Blake Grupe.
The Chiefs possessed the ball for nearly 40 minutes and would not let go of the lead; however, the Saints’ stingy red zone defense would keep the Chiefs from making the game a blowout. Butker kicked two more field goals to close the half, and the Chiefs came close to scoring in the third quarter, only for Mahomes’ pass on second and goal to deflect off JuJu Smith-Schuster’s fingertips into the arms of former Chief Khalen Saunders. The interception return set up the Saints’ second touchdown drive, a six-yard pass to Foster Moreau. However, Grupe would miss the PAT, and the Saints would turn the ball over on downs on their final two drives. Meanwhile, the Chiefs sealed the victory with Travis Kelce’s handoff to Xavier Worthy for the Chiefs’ final touchdown of the night.
Mahomes went 28-for-39 on the evening for 331 yards, including the pick. Smith-Schuster redeemed himself late in the game with a 50-yard-pass to cap off his seven catches for 130 yards.
The Chiefs are now 5-0, one of two remaining undefeated teams in the league. After the bye week, they’ll head to the Bay Area to face San Francisco in a rematch of last year’s Super Bowl.
