Temwa Chawinga netted her record-setting 19th goal of the season Saturday night at PayPal Park in San Jose, leading the Kansas City Current to a 1-0 victory over Bay FC.

Chawinga picked the ball off near midfield in the 35th minute and outwitted a defender, then rocketed her right-footed shot from outside the penalty area. The goal not only allowed Chawinga to overtake Sam Kerr for the individual league record, she also helped the Current become the fourth NWSL franchise to record 50 goals in a season. Despite Bay FC having a 56-44 advantage in possession, the Current registered 12 shots to Bay’s seven. All three Bay FC shots on goal were saved by Almuth Schult.

The Current rise to third in the NWSL standings with 49 points, with Washington playing Sunday afternoon against Louisville. With North Carolina drawing, the Current are assured of a first-round playoff game at home, as they can finish no worse than fourth. The final regular season game of the year at CPKC Stadium is set for noon Saturday against the San Diego Wave.
