Three third-quarter touchdowns turned a rebound game for Mizzou into a rout, as the 21st-ranked Tigers overwhelmed the Massachusetts Minutemen 45-3 on Saturday, Oct. 12 in Amherst, Mass.
Mizzou took the lead just two plays into the game, when Luther Burden III ran the ball 61 yards for the score on a jet-sweep play. Burden also had five catches for 59 yards, but had to leave the game in the third quarter after an apparent injury to his shoulder. Still, the Tigers were able to assert their game plan and show signs of improvement following last week’s lopsided loss at Texas A&M. Marcus Carroll got the start for Nate Noel, running the ball 15 times for 91 yards, including three touchdowns.
Quarterback Brady Cook went 14-for-19 for 219 yards, including third-quarter touchdown passes of 63 yards to Joshua Manning and eight yards to Brett Norfleet. The defense held UMass to 237 yards, only allowing a field goal in the second quarter while focing two turnovers. Corey Flagg intercepted the Minutemen just before halftime, while Caleb Flagg forced a fumble in the fourth quarter.
The Tigers improve to 5-1 overall and will welcome Auburn to Faurot Field next Saturday for the 113th Homecoming game. The SEC has announced the game will kick off at 11 a.m., with pregame at 9 a.m. on KMMO.
