An eight-man football contest between two rivals along Interstate 70 will mark a significant milestone for longtime KMMO play-by-play announcer Greg Schmidt.

Friday night’s matchup between the Concordia Orioles and Sweet Springs Greyhounds will mark Schmidt’s 6000th broadcast. He says he had dreams of playing baseball, but quickly realized his talents were suited for a different part of the ballpark.

Schmidt shadowed Art Hains at KMMO before beginning to call games for the campus radio station at Central Missouri State University in the early 1970s. After an eight-year stint in Lexington, Schmidt arrived at KMMO in 1984. Schmidt says he’s enjoyed the opportunity to broadcast from many of Missouri’s largest sports venues.
