Sedalia’s city council affirmed the city’s plan to hire and train six new firefighters, after learning at Monday night’s council meeting that the city was not awarded a grant to help cover the cost.
Fire Chief Matthew Irwin informed the council that the city did not score high enough to receive federal funds from the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response, or SAFER Grant program. City administrator Kelvin Shaw says with a new truck on its way, the city still needs the personnel to operate it.
Shaw says the council included the hires in the current budget and agreed to leave them in place.
Also at Monday night’s meeting, the Sedalia city council agreed to an agreement with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to route a new sewer line under the Katy trail to service the Governor Michael L Parson Arena that’s under construction on the State Fairgrounds, and agreed to establish a three-way stop at the intersection of West 10th Street and Mitchell.
