A Sedalia boy was killed after a four-vehicle crash north of Kansas City shut down a portion of Interstate 29 on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol responded to the collision around 3 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the interstate near the weigh station that’s four miles north of Platte City. Troopers say the boy was a passenger in a car driven by 78-year-old Patsy Withrow of Savannah that was struck in the rear by a Peterbilt tractor trailer that was skidding. The initial collision sent Withrow’s vehicle into the rear of a Freightliner before going off the right side of the roadway and into a line of trees. The Freightliner then ran into the back of a pickup truck.
The boy was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, where he was pronounced dead late Wednesday night. Withrow suffered serious injuries, while another passenger in her car reported minor injuries. The two were taken to another Kansas City area hospital for treatment. Two of the others drivers involved also received minor injuries and sought their own treatment.
