Rebounding from a loss in the first set, the Santa Fe Chiefs recovered in time to win the next three and defeat Concordia, 3-1 on Thursday, Oct. 24 in the Class One, District 14 Volleyball Championship that was held on the Orioles’ floor.
Santa Fe beat Concordia for the second time in the three matches they’ve had against each other in the past 12 days.
Midway through the opening set, the Orioles scored eight straight points to turn a 10-7 deficit into a 15-10 lead before going on to win, 25-19. After that, Santa Fe slowly began to take control, breaking a 7-7 tie to earn the second set, 25-21.
Sets three and four saw a very deep Santa Fe squad wear Concordia down as they led most of the way the last half of the match to close it out, 25-19 and 25-19.
The victory improves the Chiefs to 21-9 on the year while the Orioles end up 22-11-1. It marks Santa Fe’s fifth district crown over the past six seasons and their 14th in the last 17 years. Concordia was seeking their first district championship since 2009, but instead saw their volleyball hopes ended by Santa Fe for the 11th time in the last 15 seasons.
Santa Fe now plays at home next Thursday night in the Class 1 Sectionals when they meet Osceola, who won the District 13 Tournament at Lincoln last evening with a straight-set victory over Appleton City/Montrose.
