Kansas City Chiefs branded football laying on the grass^ with the arrowhead KC logo showing.

It took an extra five minutes, but the Kansas City Chiefs dodged the rain and an upset-minded Tampa Bay Buccaneers to stay undefeated on the year, defeating the Bucs 30-24 in overtime Monday, Nov. 4 at Arrowhead Stadium.

Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield completed six of eight passes with less than three minutes to go in regulation, including a touchdown pass to Ryan Miller. The Bucs elected to tie the game with a kick instead of attempt a two-point conversion that could win them the game. Despite the Chiefs stalling on their last drive of regulation, the coin toss went the way of Kansas City, and Mayfield could only watch as Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs on the touchdown winning drive, capped by Kareem Hunt’s two-yard scamper to pay dirt.  The touchdown was Hunt’s 27th carry of the night, finishing the night with 106 yards on the ground.

The Chiefs started the game with a 40-yard field goal from Harrison Butker. The Buccaneers responded with a seven-yard run by a former Center Yellowjacket, Rachaad White. The Chiefs retook the lead halfway through the second quarter, when DeAndre Hopkins caught his first touchdown pass in a Chiefs uniform.

Mahomes completed the night 34 for 44 with three touchdown passes and 291 yards. For the first time all season, Mahomes did not throw an interception; however, he slipped on the turf as he connected with Samaje Perine to tie the game back up at 17 apiece early in the final quarter. Mahomes was able to walk off an apparent ankle injury and put the Chiefs back in the lead with a second touchdown pass to Hopkins.

In the air, Travis Kelce led the way with 14 catches for 100 yards, while Hopkins hauled in eight passes for 86 yards. The Chiefs gave up one fumble and allowed Mahomes to get sacked four times, while the Chiefs got to Mayfield twice. The Chiefs were especially efficient on third down, converting on 12 of 18 attempts including all four touchdowns, while the Bucs could only convert five of 11 attempts.

The Chiefs remain undefeated at 8-0 and are one of three professional teams in North America to have reached the mark this season, joining the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers and NHL’s Winnipeg Jets. The Chiefs will look to go 9-0 this Sunday when the AFC West rivals Denver Broncos make their way to Arrowhead Stadium. Kickoff will be at noon, with pregame covering beginning at 11 a.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
