faurot-field-8-27-20

The 120-year-old rivalry between the Missouri Tigers and Oklahoma Sooners came back in thrilling fashion Saturday, Nov. 9 at Faurot Field, with Mizzou having the last word.

With 30 seconds to go in the game, Mizzou’s Triston Newson sacked Oklahoma quarterback Jackson Arnold to force a fumble that was scooped up by Zion Young and taken to the end zone, giving Mizzou the 30-23 victory over their former Big Eight foes.  The fumble was one of four turnovers by Oklahoma on the night.

Both offenses were slow to click, especially Mizzou’s as Drew Pyne got the start at quarterback after Brady Cook was ruled out with an injury to his hand. The first half was limited to field goals, with Oklahoma leading 9-3 at the half. Mizzou’s offense came through in the second half, when Pyne connected with Theo Wease for a 13-yard touchdown pass to take a 10-9 year. Brett Norfleet extended the lead with a five-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter; however, a false start penalty on the extra point attempt proved costly, as Blake Craig missed the longer kick.

That provided the opening for Oklahoma’s lone touchdown on offense, when Arnold caught a pass in the backfield from Taylor Tatum that turned into an 18-yard scoring play. Oklahoma would retake the lead with their own scoop-and-score, when the ball was knocked from Jamal Roberts’ hands and picked up by Billy Bowman Junior, who took it 43 yards to paydirt. The Tigers offense quickly regrouped, going 75 yards in eight plays, capped by Weese’s second touchdown catch of the night.

Pyne completed the evening going 14-for-27 for 143 yards and three touchdowns. Theo Weese had four catches for 70 yards including the two scores, while Luther Burden hauled in five passes for 55 yards. Mizzou also collected 135 yards rushing.

The Tigers are now 7-2 and back in the AP Top 25 poll with a 24th ranking. They’re in Columbia, South Carolina next weekend to face the 23rd-ranked Gamecocks for the Mayor’s Cup. Pregame is 1:15 p.m., with kickoff at 3:15 p.m., on KMMO.
