Two veteran players in the Sporting Kansas City lineup are among those who will not have their contracts renewed for next season.

The MLS side announced Thursday, Nov. 14 that captain Johnny Russell and goalkeeper Tim Melia will not return to the franchise after their contracts expired. Russell was Sporting’s ninth captain, appearing in 196 games and scoring 60 goals to become the top-scoring Scotsman in MLS history, as well as third overall at SKC. Melia wraps up his time at Sporting with 258 appearances in goal over nine seasons, proving instrumental in the team’s 2015 U.S. Open Cup championship. The 38-year-old had seen his playing time decrease as Sporting turned to younger talent including Jon Hulskamp.

Sporting also announced the they would not renew the contracts of defender Andreu Fontas and midfielder Rémi Walter. They also declined the 2025 contract options on four more players, while exercising those on the contracts of seven players including forwards Stephen Afrifa and William Agada. 18 players are currently on contract for next season, which will be the 16th full season under the direction of manager Peter Vermes.
