The Buffalo Bills controlled time of possession and made full use of their playbook, outlasting the Kansas City Chiefs 30-21 on Sunday, Nov. 17 to hand the Chiefs their first loss of the season.
Buffalo scored on their first drive, a three-yard rush by James Cook, but the extra-point attempt by Tyler Bass was no good. The Chiefs would take the lead on the next drive with a ten-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Worthy, followed Spencer Shrader’s first PAT in a Chiefs uniform. Cook would give the Bills the lead right back with another rushing touchdown. Noah Gray caught a touchdown pass of two yards later in the second quarter to put the Chiefs back in front, but Bass would reclaim the lead for Buffalo at the end of the half with a 33-yard field goal.
Buffalo asserted control of the game throughout the second half, forcing the Chiefs to punt twice in the third quarter. A Curtis Samuel 12-yard pass from Bills quarterback Josh Allen made it a two-possession game early in the fourth quarter. The Chiefs responded with Gray’s second touchdown catch, but the Bills would wind the clock down before Josh Allen darted in on fourth and two from 26 yards out to ice the game with 2:17 remaining. The Chiefs’ attempt to respond ended with Patrick Mahomes throwing an interception on fourth and long.
The Bills outranked the Chiefs in nearly every metric, with Josh Allen going 27-for-40 to 262 yards, and Buffalo going 9-for-15 on third down. The Bills defense got to Mahomes, picking him off twice and sacking him another two times. Mahomes finished the game 23-for-33 with 196 yards and three touchdowns. Xavier Worthy led the Chiefs receivers with 61 yards on four catches. The Chiefs defense allowed 30 points in a game for the first time since Super Bowl LVII, as the Chiefs lost their first game since Christmas.
The Chiefs remain on the road next week when they visit the Carolina Panthers. Kickoff is at noon, with pregame at 11 a.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
