The Kansas City Current’s defense were again outwitted by the top-seeded Orlando Pride, allowing two goals in the second half to crash out of the NWSL Playoffs with a 3-2 loss Sunday, Nov. 17 in Orlando.
The Current netted the first goal in the 33rd minute, when Michelle Cooper made her way into the box and set up Debinha with the cross, allowing the Brazilian to notch her fourth career playoff goal. Orlando would equalize eight minutes later when Overland Park native Haley McCutcheon found an opening in the Current defense to connect from close range. The Current’s defense was tested frequently, but were ultimately thwarted twice when Malawian forward Barbra Banda and longtime Brazilian star Marta each claimed goals. The Current took advantage of a video-reviewed handball call that turned into a penalty kick by Vanessa DiBernardo, but were unable to claim the equalizer after 18 minutes of stoppage time.
The loss means that Kansas City will not play for the NWSL Championship, which they will host this Saturday evening between the Pride and Washington Spirit, last year’s champions. The Current’s season comes to a close with a league record of 17 wins, seven draws, and four losses, as well as the Summer Cup championship.
