The Tom Butterfield Early Childhood Center could soon host an all-day preschool class.
The Marshall Public Schools Board of Education heard a presentation last week from building administrator Jamie Dillon on the current enrollment levels and learning progress at the center, as well as the demand for the district’s early childhood services. Superintendent Caleb Petet says there is enough interest to add a full-day classroom next school year.
Petet says the board will need to approve adding the class at a future meeting.
Also at last week’s meeting, the school board approved an extension with the buyers of the former Southeast Elementary school, to give them an additional year to convert the building into apartments.
Superintendent Caleb Petet adds that lessons from converting Southeast could be put to use when determining the fate of Benton and Northwest schools after the new intermediate school opens next year. Public hearings and open houses for both buildings are scheduled in January, with Benton School hosting their open house the evening of Jan. 15 and Northwest on the 16th. The City of Marshall will assume ownership of Eastwood Elementary at the conclusion of the school year.
