Both number-one seeds in this year’s Glasgow Invitational Tournament have worked their way into Saturday’s championship games as semifinal-round action for the 94th annual event got underway Wednesday night.

Harrisburg’s boys and Cairo’s girls each won in pretty decisive fashion last evening with the Bulldogs routing Slater, 91-58 which was followed up by the 60-41 decision that Cairo posted over the Harrisburg girls.

Second Quarter Explosion

Leading only 13-12 after the first eight minutes, Harrisburg put the Slater boys away with a second-period outburst that left little doubt about the outcome. The Bulldogs outscored the Wildcats, 26-11 during that quarter to build for themselves a 39-23 advantage by halftime. From there, Harrisburg extended the lead throughout the final half to win going away as they chalked up an impressive, 91-58 victory.

Four players were in double figures for the Bulldogs. Trace Combs paced them with 21 points while Caleb Sager added 14, Bryce Ott scored 11 and Miles Thornhill contributed 10 for the winners. Slater had three people in double figures themselves as Brandon Terrill tossed in 13 points with Maddox Tyler tallying 11 as Nixon Sanders chipped in with 10 for the losing side.

Now 2-0 on the year, Harrisburg will play in Saturday night’s championship game at 7:30 after 2-2 Slater does battle in the third-place contest at 4:30 that afternoon.

Overcoming Adversity

In Wednesday’s other semifinal-round matchup, the Cairo girls endured a cold spell midway through the game before bouncing back with gusto the last 14 minutes of the contest to beat Harrisburg by nearly 20 points.

The Lady Bearcats were on top, 14-5 after one period only to see the Lady Bulldogs slice into that lead as they cut the margin to 25-22 early in the third quarter. However, things turned around shortly after that with Cairo outscoring their opponent, 35-19 the rest of the way, enabling them to win, 60-41. Macie Harmon and Mallory Hankins both had 15 points for the winners while Avery Brumley tacked on 13. Meanwhile, Harrisburg was paced by Lorelai Hunziker and Avelia McKenzie each of whom tallied 11 points for the Lady Bulldogs.

Cairo’s girls have now reached the Glasgow Tournament championship game for the seventh time in the past
eight years as they’ll next play at 6:00 Saturday after the Harrisburg girls compete for third place at 3;00 pm.

Glasgow Teams Win Twice

Meanwhile, in losers’ bracket action last night, both Glasgow squads won fairly easily and will now vie for consolation honors early Saturday afternoon.

The Yellowjacket boys closed out another long night of basketball by defeating Marceline, 68-38. Ten Glasgow players scored during this one as Jackson Meyer led them with a 17-point effort. Much earlier in the proceedings, the Glasgow girls were big winners over Slater, defeating the Lady Wildcats, 61-27. Hallie Fuemmeler and Aly Prentzler both tallied 12 points for the home team as Brooklyn Morris chipped in with 10. Top scoring honors in this contest went to Slater’s Madison Prysock who contributed 14 points for her side.
