The Missouri Tigers led by as much as 24, and held on to defeat the Kansas Jayhawks 76-67 on Sunday, Dec. 8 at Mizzou Arena.
Kansas got into foul trouble early, allowing Mizzou to score 14 out of 16 from the charity stripe. The Tigers took advantage of 15 Jayhawk turnovers in the first half, scoring the 14 points that was Mizzou’s margin at the half, 39-25. KU ultimately coughed up the ball 22 times, and trailed Mizzou 57-33 with 14 minutes to play. However, the Jayhawks would not go quietly, rattling off 15 unanswered points to get within nine. Kansas would get within two points with 2:20 to go, but a critical three-point basket by Mark Mitchell and two missed shots by KU allowed Mizzou to pad their lead and hand the Jayhawks their second straight loss.
The Tigers shot 44 percent from the field, including four of 13 from three-point range and converted 26 of 31 free throws. Tamar Bates led the way for Mizzou with 29 points, including all nine free-throw attempts and six from behind the arc. Mark Mitchell added 17 points and Anthony Robinson the Second contributed 11. Four Jayhawks were in double figures, led by Hunter Dickinson with 19.
The Tigers are now 8-1, maintaining an undefeated mark at Mizzou Arena this season. It’s also the first time since February 2012 that Mizzou defeated KU and first win over a top-ranked team since 1997, a double-overtime thriller also against Kansas. Mizzou won’t be back on the court until Saturday morning at 11 a.m., when they host Long Island.
