The Kansas City Chiefs keep finding bizarre ways to win games, and Sunday night’s battle with the Los Angeles Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium was no exception.
Trailing 17-16 but with their destiny firmly within their control, the Chiefs marched down the field to set up a 31-yard chip shot from the right hash by Matthew Wright. Wright’s fourth field goal of the game caromed off the left upright and through to secure the 19-17 win. Wright, who continued to fill in for an injured Harrison Butker, was the Chiefs’ workhorse last night, connecting on field goals of 47 and 33 yards in the first half, then a 50-yarder early in the fourth quarter. The lone Chiefs touchdown came later in the second quarter, when Patrick Mahomes capped a nine-play, 77-yard drive with a nine-yard pass to Deandre Hopkins.
The Chiefs kept the Chargers off the board in the first half, but adjustments in the second half allowed made it a game. Gus Edwards scored on the the Bolts’ first possession of the half, then Justin Herbert tied the game up with a four-yard pass to Quentin Johnston; Cameron Dicker’s extra point gave the Chargers their first lead of the game, and a 37-yard field goal put them back in front ahead of the Chiefs’ game-winning drive.
Mahomes finished the game 24 for 37 with 210 passing yards and one touchdown, along with four keepers for 17. He was sacked three times as the offensive line again struggled to keep Mahomes untouched. Isiah Pacheco led the ground game with 14 carries for 55 yards, while Travis Kelce and Xavier Worthy each had five catches on the night.
As a division winner, the Chiefs are assured of one home game during the playoffs. They now have a two-game lead on Buffalo following the Bills’ shock loss at the Rams. The Chiefs take their 12-1 record to Cleveland next Sunday for a noon kickoff against the Browns; pregame will be at 11 a.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
