The higher seeded teams all won their first round games Monday, Dec. 9 as the girls’ portion of the I-70 Conference Basketball Tournament got underway at Crest Ridge and Lone Jack.

In contests aired on KMMO from Crest Ridge, third-seeded St. Paul Lutheran wrapped up a long evening of action by punching their way past Sweet Springs, 46-32. Prior to that, it was second-seeded Crest Ridge rolling all over Wellington-Napoleon, 64-29.

Fouls And Free Throws Aplenty

The St. Paul-Sweet Springs matchup featured a total of 56 fouls called with some 64 free throws shot.

Both sides saw two girls foul out while several other players had four personals each. In addition, the Saints went a long way toward winning the game by shooting 46 free throws while making 21 of them. Sweet Springs’ numbers were closer to normal as they were eight of 18 from the charity stripe. St. Paul led this contest 14-7 after one quarter and later 24-11 at the half before slugging their way to a 46-32 victory.

With the Saints now 3-1 on the season, Chloe Fahrmeier scored 24 points while Bella Woods added 17, accounting for 41 of St. Paul’s 46 points. Meanwhile, dropping to 1-3 thus far, Sweet Springs received 10 points from Reagan McCoy.

Over Early

Monday night’s first game saw a rejuvenated Crest Ridge program square off against an injury-plagued Wellington-Napoleon squad.

The unbeaten Cougars were on top, 22-9 after one period and then 41-18 at the break. From there, Crest Ridge forced quite a bit of the fourth quarter to be played with the turbo-clock in effect as they stretched the final margin to 35 points in their 64-29 victory.

Now 4-0 on the year, the Cougars saw Laney Wilhite tally 16 points while Brilynn Fleming added 13. Losing for the fourth time in as many outings, Wellington was led by nine points from Brilynn Zykan.

Results From Lone Jack

In the half of the tournament that was played last evening at Lone Jack, the top-seeded and tournament host Mules defeated Orrick, 57-17. That was followed up by fourth-seeded Concordia’s 46-44 decision over Santa Fe.

Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s Games

The second-round games for the I-70 Conference girls’ tournament are set for Wednesday night. The KMMO microphones will again be at Crest Ridge as Wellington-Napoleon and Sweet Springs battle in a consolation contest at 5:30 p.m.; we’ll have pregame from 5:20 p.m. The championship semifinal will follow around 7 p.m. when the host Cougars face St Paul Concordia. At Lone Jack, the consolation contest between Santa Fe and Orrick is at 5:30, while Concordia challenge the host Mules in the other championship semifinal at 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, the boys’ bracket tips off tonight. Crest Ridge will host Sweet Springs at 5:30; we’ll have pregame beginning at 5:20 on KMMO-FM 102.9. Saint Paul Lutheran and Santa Fe will face off in the following contest. At Lone Jack, it’s the Mules and Orrick Bearcats starting things off there around 5:30, followed by Concordia and Wellington-Napoleon at 7 p.m.
