The St Louis Cardinals will have their highest draft selection in 26 years, thanks to a beneficial draw in this winter’s draft lottery.
The Cardinals entered Tuesday night’s draw with the 13th best odds to secure the top draft pick, but ended up with the fifth selection. Last year the Cardinals had the seventh overall pick, which they used to draft infielder JJ Wetherholt from West Virginia. The Cardinals finished 83-79 last season and are anticipating a reset for the 2025 season as John Mozeliak begins to wind down his time as the team’s president of baseball operations.
Meanwhile, by virtue of their playoff finish, the Kansas City Royals will have the 23rd selection.
The Washington Nationals, Los Angeles Angels, Seattle Mariners, and Colorado Rockies will have the first four picks in next summer’s draft.
