The Kansas City Chiefs recorded four interceptions—including two in the end zone—to keep the Cleveland Browns from mounting a comeback, posting a 21-7 victory Sunday, Dec. 15 along Lake Erie.
Browns quarterback Jameis Winston threw three interceptions, including two to the end zone. Trent McDuffie and Bryan Cook had those picks, while Nick Bolton snatched Winston’s pass on the first play of the second half. Jaden Hicks intercepted backup quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, while Samaje Perine and Drue Tranquill secured a pair of fumbles to contribute to the most Chiefs takeaways in a game in eight seasons. George Karlaftis had two of the Chiefs’ five sacks that kept Cleveland from tasking advantage of an offense still not firing on all cylinders.
The Chiefs stalled on the opening drive, but forced a fumble on the punt return that set up the game’s first score, a seven-yard pass play from Patrick Mahomes to Juju Smith-Schuster. Mahomes also threw a six-yard touchdown pass late in the second quarter to Noah Gray. The Chiefs also scored on the first possession of the second half by way of a 21-yard carry by Xavier Worthy. Cleveland’s only score came late in the third quarter when Jerome Ford went 62 yards to paydirt.
The Chiefs outranked the Browns in nearly every metric, with 18 first downs, including going seven-for-18 on third, and collecting 311 yards of total offense. Still, the offense had issues, with six drives going three-and-out, resulting in Matt Araiza having to punt nine times. Mahomes threw for two touchdowns and finished 19-for-38 with 159 yards. However, his completion rate took a tumble when his last eight attempts of the third quarter all went incomplete. He was also pulled from the game with an apparent ankle injury when he was tackled after throwing on fourth down with just over five minutes remaining. Carson Wentz played the rest of the game and went two-for-two.
Xavier Worthy had six catches for 46 yards to lead the Chiefs offense, while Kareem Hunt led the rushing game with 13 carries for 45 yards. In his first game back from injury, Harrison Butker missed his only field goal attempt of the game, a 29-yard chip-shot from the right hash just before halftime.
The Chiefs have a short turnaround before Saturday’s game at Arrowhead Stadium, when they host the AFC South-leading Houston Texans. Kickoff is at noon, with pregame at 11 a.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
