The City of Marceline will swear in a new city council member at the beginning of the new year.

According to the city’s minutes, the council appointed Matt Gibson to fill a vacancy caused by the resignation of Josh Shoemaker, who moved outside of the city in November. The vacancy was filled in a special meeting Dec. 10, which saw the council deadlock over three candidates before Mayor Sallie Buck changed her mind to support Gibson’s candidacy. Council members Gary Carlson and Shelly Milford were in support, while Brian Baker was opposed. Gibson was unable to attend the regularly scheduled council meeting Dec. 11, and will take his oath of office ahead of the next meeting scheduled for Jan. 8.
