The Concordia R-II Schools Board of Education tabled discussion during their December meeting on a resolution expressing opposition to bills pre-filed in the Missouri General Assembly that would enable open enrollment across the state.

Superintendent Dr Theresa Christian says the board passed a similar resolution last year during the legislative session. She tells KMMO News one concern of hers is the mixed effects that neighboring states including Iowa and Kansas have seen since allowing open enrollment.

Christian says another concern is the impact transferring between districts will have on a student, especially if they don’t stay in the same district from year to year.

A major concern brought up by Dr Christian is how a district accepting students will cover the costs of educating them.

Christian says the Concordia School Board may consider a new resolution concerning the issue during the spring semester, once lawmakers are in session in Jefferson City. She says the board could renew last year’s resolution.
