The Friendly Confines of Wrigley Field were very friendly to the Saint Louis Blues, who tangled up the Chicago Blackhawks in the outfield ivy with a 6-2 pasting Tuesday, Dec. 31 in the NHL’s annual Winter Classic.
Defenseman Cam Fowler made his 1000th game a memorable one, scoring twice including the opening goal on a power play less than two minutes into the contest. Fowler became just the eighth player in NHL history to score twice in his 1000th game when he blasted a wrist shot from the blue line late in the second period. Justin Faulk had a goal in the second while assisting Dylan Holloway and Alexandre Texier with their goals. Jordan Kyrou also recorded a power-play goal in the first. Chicago outshot the Blues 30-28 but were on the back skate throughout the contest, only scoring on a pair of power plays. Jordan Binnington recorded 28 saves in his 300th career game.
The Blues are now 3-0 all time in Winter Classic appearances, having beating Chicago in 2017 at Busch Stadium and the Minnesota Wild in 2022 at Target Field. More importantly, they advance to fifth in the Central Division standings with 40 points, four points behind Colorado for third in the division and two points behind Vancouver for second in the wild card standings. However, the Canucks have four games in hand while Colorado have two.
The Blues return home Friday night to start 2025 with a home game against the Ottawa Senators. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
