The first major snowstorm of the season has its sights set on the KMMO listening area.

The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill has issued a winter storm watch for the evening of Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025 and most of Sunday, Jan. 5, as heavy snow and ice accumulation is expected. Lead meteorologist Chris Bowman says wintry precipitation is expected throughout the weekend.

Bowman says areas north of the Missouri River, particularly along U.S. Route 36, will see the heaviest snowfall totals, currently projected at 13 inches, while areas south of Interstate 70 could experience ice up to two-tenths of an inch thick. The snow is expected to stick for awhile, as Bowman says a cold air mass will follow the storm.

KMMO will have updates on winter conditions, including road conditions and any closings and postponements, available on our airwaves as well as our website.
