The Missouri Department of Transportation continues to discourage travel on the state’s roadways, following the past weekend’s blizzard conditions.
While the snowstorm is forecast to exit Monday, Jan. 6, crews are continuing to tackle snow and ice accumulation on Missouri’s nearly 34,000-mile network of state highways. Nearly 1500 snow trucks are operating, with crews working 12-hour shifts until roads are considered mostly clear. Bitterly cold temperatures forecast for Monday, along with wind gusts and blowing snow, will make the task more difficult according to MoDOT, hence their call for motorists to avoid travel.
Nearly all roadways in our area are considered covered but have not been closed. MoDOT closed a section of Interstate 29 overnight Sunday, from St Joseph north to Rock Port, but it has since reopened. MoDOT’s counterparts in Kansas have closed the entirety of Interstate 70 in their state, including through Kansas City.
