A minor league signing over the weekend for the Kansas City Royals is drawing attention from many corners of the baseball world.
The Royals announced Sunday the signing of utility player Cavan Biggio to a Minor League contract. He’s the son of Craig Biggio, the Hall-of-Famer who played 20 seasons for the Houston Astros, primarily as catcher. Cavan Biggio has major league experience, following his debut with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2019. He hit eight home runs and stole 14 bases in the Covid-shortened 2020 season, missing just one game. Last season Biggio made at least ten appearances each at first base, second base, third base, and right field. However, his season was thrown for a loop when Toronto traded him to the Dodgers this past June and was released two months later. Biggio also briefly spent time with San Francisco and Atlanta, appearing in four games last September for the Braves.
Biggio will have the opportunity to compete for a spot on the Royals’ Major League roster next month, as he’s expected to take part in Spring Training in Surprise, Ariz.
