The Missouri Tigers earned their first road win against a top-five team in 13 seasons, defeating the fifth-ranked Florida Gators 83-82 on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at the O’Connell Center in Gainesville.
Florida was riding high into the game, having defeated previously top-ranked Tennessee by 30 points in their last home game, and securing one first-place vote in this week’s AP Poll. Instead, it was the Tigers who seized momentum early, building a lead as large as 19 points in the first half, then keeping Florida off the board the final four-and-a-half minutes of the frame. The Gators would not go away, chiseling at the Tiger lead throughout the second. However, the closest they would get is one, with their final basket of the game.
Caleb Grill had six three-point baskets in the game to lead Mizzou with 22 points off the bench. He was one of four Tigers in double-figures, as Mark Mitchell added 15 points and eight rebounds, Anthony Robinson contributed 12 points, and Tamar Bates scored ten points. Mizzou shot 55 percent from the field in the first half, including seven from three-point range, en route to a 44 percent completion rate. The Tigers claimed 18 points off turnovers and led throughout the second half. Florida only suited eight players and relied on Walter Clayton Junior to lead them with 28 points.
Mizzou are now 14-3 on the season and 3-1 in SEC play. They host Arkansas on Saturday, with tip off at 5 p.m.; pregame coverage from the Tiger Radio Network will begin at 4:30 p.m. on KMMO AM 1300.
