One of the last remaining buildings at the former Marshall Habilitation Center campus could be repurposed by Marshall Public Schools for their maintenance needs.
Supt. Caleb Petet presented a preliminary plan for a future maintenance and shipping and handling facility at Tuesday night’s school board meeting. Petet says the building is still standing near the future intermediate school and is structurally sound.
Petet presented three of five possible projects for the building, which included an exterior redesign to match the aesthetic of the new school and updated parking and sidewalks. He says what’s available in the capital improvements fund after completion of the intermediate school will determine what the district can go forward with.
However, Petet notes that one of the ideas to keep costs down could result in Marshall changing its approach to fulfilling a goal in their Comprehensive School Improvement Plan.
Additional projects for the building include outfitting the interior of the building. Petet said all five projects for the building if implemented could total $4.6 million dollars. He’ll present a recommendation at next month’s board of education meeting, set for Feb. 11.
