A staple in the Marshall skyline for over 110 years is no more.

Demolition crews from Earthworks Excavation brought down the smokestack at the former Marshall Habilitation Center on Friday, Jan. 17, the latest project to remove buildings from the closed state hospital. Marshall Mayor Vince Lutterbie visited with KMMO News after the demolition to reflect on the close of a chapter in Marshall’s history.

Construction crews at the nearby intermediate school, as well as a number of spectators at the parking lot across the lake, watched as took took about 50 minutes to bring down the stack. With the boiler building demolition almost complete, Lutterbie says the city turns their attention toward converting their part of the site into a park area.

Lutterbie says bricks from the Habilitation Center site will be available for the public to claim mementos in the near future from the parking lot to the north of Amary Lake.
