Tyler Tucker opened the scoring for the St Louis Blues two minutes into Saturday night’s contest at Utah, but they had no answer for the duo of Clayton Keller and Logan Cooley in a 4-2 loss at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City.
Tucker turned a faceoff from Oskar Sundqvist into a snap shot that went past the shoulder of goalie Connor Ingram to get the Blues on the board first. But the Blues lead would only last four minutes, as Keller and Cooley helped set up Michael Kesselring’s power play goal, followed by Keller’s assist in Nick Schmaltz’ go-ahead goal. Keller and Cooley would set each other up for goals of their own, with Keller getting the game-winner halfway through the first and Cooley sending in the insurance goal halfway through the second period. Jake Neighbours tallied the other Blues goal during a power play early in the second.
Despite winning nearly 60 percent of faceoffs, the Blues could only record 24 shots on goal, with Ingram stopping 22 of them. Blues goalie Jordan Binnington recorded 29 saves in the loss.
A Calgary win last night has the Blues now three points behind the Flames for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference, but still nine points behind Dallas for third in the Central Division. The Blues pay a visit to the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday evening, with puck drop at 5 p.m.
