Two Vegas Golden Knights goals in the final three minutes forced the St Louis Blues to skate an extra five minutes, but shootout goals by Jake Neighbours and Brayden Schenn along with a pair of stops by Jordan Binnington allowed the Blues to escape Sin City with a 5-4 victory Monday, Jan. 20.
Schenn and Neighbours both had goals during regulation, with Schenn opening the scoring while Neighbours tallied his 13th score of the season during the second period. Nathan Walker and Cam Fowler also netted goals to complete the Blues’ scoring in regulation. The Golden Knights recorded 32 shots on goal, with Thomas Hertl getting the hosts on the board with a power play goal with six minutes remaining in the first. Brett Howden got Vegas to back within one in the second period, and received a boost from Shea Theodore, who recorded an assist on all four goals.
The win gets the Blues back within one point of Calgary for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference, but the Flames now have three games in hand. Meanwhile, Dallas remain third in the Central Division with 59 points, nine points better than the Blues with two games in hand. The Blues and Vegas will face each other again Thursday night, this time in St Louis, with puck drop at 7 p.m.
