Tuesday morning’s extremely cold temperatures are the area’s first use of simpler terms that the National Weather Service debuted this winter to describe the severity of cold weather.

Jonathan Kurtz, warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill, told KMMO News in September about the new terms and what they’re replacing.

Kurtz said while the terms are changing, the conditions to meet them are largely unchanged from the previous names.

The National Weather Service also phased out Hard Freeze Warnings and Watches. Those have become just Freeze Warnings and Watches.
