The Slater City Council accepted a grant for handheld radios for the Fire Department during its meeting on Tuesday, January 21.
City Administrator Gene Griffith said the Slater Fire Department submitted for the MFA Fire Grant in late 2024. This grant offers funds that can be used to equip volunteer fire departments with the training and resources they need to save lives and protect property. Slater received a $2,000 grant for the handheld radios.
In other news, the council approved a bill to raise the grave opening fee by $100. This includes openings on weekdays and weekends, as well as cremations.
The council also reported not having an election in April after only four candidates filed for the four available seats. Incumbents Matt Campbell, Brenda Smith, Crystal Wiseman, and Caleb Jordan all refiled.
