The Pettis County Commission met with members of the Sedalia City Council to discuss the ballot language of the road and bridge sales tax, which voters will have the chance to renew in April.

This tax was first passed in 2000, with a five year sunset. With county voters continuing to support the tax the past two decades, the commission decided to remove the sunset to make the tax permanent. The council met with the commission with the hope of changing the tax’s ballot language to set aside a specific amount of money each year for each municipality. Presiding Commissioner Bill Taylor says the commission is hesitant to make this change because of potential emergencies that may require that money to be used elsewhere in the county.

Taylor also says the county allocates this money with a grant system, where municipalities are awarded funds based off the costs of each project.

Taylor says this helps the county stay in compliance with state and county auditors. No formal action was taken during this meeting. The election is scheduled for Tuesday, April 8.
