The Sedalia City Council voted unanimously Monday, Jan. 27 to uphold Mayor Andrew Dawson’s veto of a proposed one-eighth cent sales tax proposal.

The seven council members present at the special session expressed agreement with Dawson’s objections that he outlined in a letter overruling the 5-3 vote the council took last week. Third Ward Councilman Bob Cross made the motion to override the veto, then stated his decision to uphold the mayor’s objection, citing concerns that the proposal was not needed to repair the Washington Street Bridge.

Fourth Ward Councilman Steve Bloess had proposed the tax in an effort to provide voters an alternative to Pettis County’s push to renew their half-cent road and bridge sales tax this April. He also voted to sustain the veto. Second Ward Councilman Chris Marshall, who was one of three votes against the tax last week, was absent from this afternoon’s meeting.

The sustained veto means that just the county’s road and bridge sales tax renewal will appear on the April 8 ballot. The deadline for polities to submit ballot measures to their county election authority is Tuesday afternoon.
