Grace Slaughter’s career-high 31-point performance was capped by a buzzer-beater jump shot to lift Mizzou to their first win in SEC play, defeating Mississippi State 78-77 on Monday, Jan. 27 at Mizzou Arena.
Slaughter proved instrumental in sparking Mizzou’s comeback, breaking a nine-point run by the Bulldogs at the start of the second half, then making back-to-back three pointers to cut the deficit to one. The Tigers stayed on the Bulldogs’ heels throughout the evening, as they never led by more than four points. Laniah Randle and Ashton Judd each posted 14 points, while the team made 20 out of 23 free throw attempts and show 38 percent from behind the arc. Mississippi State’s Jerkaila Jordan netted 40 points in the losing effort, including five three-point baskets. However, she went nine-for-17 from the free-throw line, drawing half of the Tigers’ 23 fouls. Denim DeShields add 12 points, while Madina Okot secured a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Tigers are now 12-10 overall, with a 1-6 record in the SEC. Mizzou visit the Texas Longhorns on Thursday night at 8 p.m.
